Welcome |
 |
The Merry Crab is a small and secluded 'beach-bush-camp'.
Carved out of the very special Admiralty Reserve that borders our coastline, The Merry Crab is designed to accommodate up to 18 people in 1&2 bedroomed, self-catering (or B&B) cabanas. Fresh linen (including bath towels) is supplied as well as soaps & loo paper.
Each Cabana has its own TV, microwave, stove, fridge, braai & private sundeck with sea view.
Because The Merry Crab is so secure our guests tend to throw caution to the wind! Anything goes - from late night skinny-dipping in the inviting pool to tanning topless under the lala palms! The 'lapa' is a popular rendezvou where guest gather around the "Crabby Mike's" (honesty bar) to discuss 'the biggest wave' or 'the one that got away' - then just a pathway away is a beach so pretty it has been used as a film set.
The area as a whole is a rather special place where summer spends winter (winter day-time temperatures approx 24°C) and, to put it in a 'coco-nut' shell, year round sunshine (incredible balmy weather!), warm seas, dolphins, whales, sea birds, safe bathing, sublime surfing, fishing, diving, friendly locals, fine restaurants in glorious tropical settings makes it one of South Africa's most sought-after destinations! In the heart of a golfer's paradise "The Merry Crab" is becoming a favourite among golfing parties.

Description |
 |
Strategically positioned, The Merry Crab (self-catering accommodation), is among the most ideal Indian Ocean locations from which to experience one of nature's greatest mysteries! Filmed by CNN, BBC & National Geographic, it is the single biggest faunal event to occur in our coastal waters annually
- a phenomenon not seen anywhere else in the world! ! -
It’s little wonder it’s dubbed
"The greatest shoal on earth"!
From our beach, the winter migration of these huge shoals of sardines
(Sardinops sagax) can be sighted during the months of June and July.
The area as a whole is a rather special place where summer spends winter
(winter day-time temperatures + 24°C)
and, to put it in a 'coco-nut' shell, year round sunshine
(incredible balmy weather!),
warm seas, dolphins, whales, sea birds, safe bathing, sublime surfing, fantastic fishing, awesome diving, friendly locals, fine restaurants
(Italian, German, French, Portuguese)
and glorious tropical settings makes it one of South Africa's
most sought-after destinations!
Its 6 golf courses
(4 are within + 15 minutes of The Merry Crab - 2 are of SA's top 3!)
has earned our little paradise the reputation of being a world class golf destination
- hence the title, 'Golf Coast' -
Cold and warm waters merge creating rich marine ecosystems and a billion sardines on the move. Infused with inshore currents and predator herding, the disorientated masses, in their frenzy, surge into the shallows and onto the beach, a boiling pot of flapping fins, inducing a fever of excitement as everyone scrambles for their share of the silvery bounty dished up by nature.
Approximately 3000 Bottlenose Dolphins follow the sardine run up the coast and between 15 000 and 30 000 Common Dolphins move inshore to feed. As they surf the waves in search of the shoal, they provide a never to be forgotten spectacle.
The Humpback whale, the Southern Right whale, the Minke whale (and more recently a black-and-white killer whale) are also found close inshore during the Sardine Run, offering regular sightings from various vantage points. The Humpbacks often leap clear of the water while the Southern Rights loll on the surface. This is whale watching at its best!
The range extension afforded by the colder water brings with it thousands of copper, dusky, blacktip & spinner sharks as well as Cape fur seals (often washed up on the beach too gorged to move), a vast numbers of game-fish and a wealth of bird life.
Hundreds of thousands of Cape Gannets move up the Hibiscus Coast, their spectacular dive bombing, one of the first indications that the sardines are on the run. There are regular sightings of several species of Tern, White- Chinned Petrels, Wilson's Storm Petrels and even Shy Blackbrowed and Yellownosed Albatrosses.
This 'moving fish restaurant' and ensuing feeding frenzy is a sight to behold and
certainly one of the wildest spectacles to occur anywhere on the planet.
.. and yes, diving expeditions, pleasure cruises and dolphin and whale watching trips abound.. by sea as well as by air (the presence of game fish, of course, intensify during the Sardine Run & everyone has the chance of landing the big one!
